Factors Affecting the Cost

Extra detail on the factors to give more context on the prices is given below.

Colouring

Companies usually offer the standard colours of white, grey and black free of charge. Some may then charge for common, but non-standard colours such as cream and brown. These will be around £50 per panel.

Many companies also offer hundreds of colours listed on the RAL chart so you have an abundance of options to choose from. These bespoke RAL colours are painted specifically for the job. These will cost around £100 per panel.

You can use different colours for the internal and external faces of the doors, but remember this may mean you pay for 2 different colours.

A common trend is to match the colour of bifold doors with the brick shades used in your home.

Brand Used

Some of the common brands you’ll see companies mention include AluK and Schuco, Cortizo, Smarts System. These will vary slightly in price.

Faster Delivery

Some companies may be able to offer quicker delivery should you need your bifold doors to arrive urgently. Expect to pay around £100 extra within a week and £250 within 48 hours.

There may be periods when a company cannot do this though, so be sure to check beforehand. These prices are for delivery only, not fixing.

Are Cills Needed?

A cill is part of the bottom of the door that projects out. This ensures the brickwork underneath the doors is protected from rainwater. If the contractor quote doesn’t include cills and they are needed, expect to pay £15 – £20 extra per panel.

Are Trickle Vents Needed?

Trickle vents are devices positioned at the top of a doorway to allow air to flow through them. They improve air quality within the house and help reduce condensation and mould growth.

If you are replacing old doors and windows with new and the outgoing windows have trickle vents already, then the new windows will also require them.

If you are building a new extension current Building Regulations require you to provide ventilation. Trickle vents are one solution. Others are air bricks, purge ventilation, extraction or other approved method.

They are likely to be built into the price a contractor quotes, but if not, expect to pay £90 – £140 total.

Does an Opening Already Exist?

Fitting costs will be lower if there is already an opening or an existing frame. Removing brickwork will result in extra labour costs.

Type of Glass Used

Laminated windows are shatter-proof and have security advantages. These will cost + £40 per panel more than glass that meets current building regulations.

Higher thermal efficiency glass will also cost more. You can tell how well it insulates by it’s U-value, which is a measure of heat loss in a building.

Choose the best performing glass that you can afford. The lower the U-values, the better it insulates. This means less heat is lost and this can help lower your monthly heating bills. A supplier should be able to tell you the U-value you need to meet depending on your project.

Check with the supplier that the U-value is for the door as a whole. As U-values are getting harder to meet, some will just quote the U-value of the glass pane. Tell the supplier you’ll need a certification upon completion of the works.

If no glass is needed (e.g internal bifold doors), then you can save approximately £100 per door.

Location of Supplier

If you use a company near you, then there shouldn’t be any additional costs to supply or fit your bifold doors.

However, if you use a company much further away, then may add extra costs depending on which delivery zone you fall under. Check the company’s website for their specific costings.

Supply prices are generally similar throughout the UK. However, if you’re looking to have your bifold doors fitted as well, labour costs will generally be higher in the south of England and London areas, and the north being somewhat cheaper.

Factors to Consider When Choosing Supplier

What’s Their Guarantee?

Many companies will offer multi-year or lifetime guarantees to try and get the sale. Insurance backed guarantees are the best as if a contractor goes under, you can claim on the insurance.

However, insurance backed guarantees have a cost to them, so you’ll end up paying more for the peace of mind.

How Many Panels Can You Fit In?

Bifold pricing is mainly dependent on the number of panels rather than the width of the opening. As panels can range from 700mm to 1000mm, this means you may be able to fit fewer panels into your opening.

It’s usually better to have fewer panels as there is less framework to disrupt the view outside. Fewer panels also let more light in.

Essentially measure the opening of your panel, divide it by 1000 and then round up to calculate the fewest number of panels you’ll need.

What Accreditations Do They Have?

Accreditations are important in ensuring that contractors are likely to do a proper job. Look for accreditations such as:

Site Surveys and Consultations

Many companies will want to visit your home to do a site survey and measurement before quoting you an exact figure for a supply and install job.

They may also send a technician who can help answer your questions and who can work you through their different designs and options. The service is usually free and with no obligations.
